Purpose:

Provide an area and equipment for residents to grow vegetables and flowers for personal use. It is also an area where members and nonmembers can relax and enjoy nature in an outdoor environment.  The Garden Club has honey bee hives owned and maintained by Garden Club members.

Physical amenities:  There are 52 plots of approximately 120 sq feet with water available to each, in a fenced area located adjacent to the golf driving range on the outer loop. Plots are assigned by the President to fill resident requests based on availability.  Leaves are used to make mulch and compost on site.  There is a secured shed where common use equipment and pesticides are stored.  Some individual space is also available for storing personal gardening materials.

Governance:  There is a President, Vice President and Treasurer elected annually In accordance with the Garden Club Policies and Procedures developed by the club members.

Number of members: 25 active

Points of Contact : Jim Conner/Jim Dower/Jim Byrd –all have contact info in residence directory

Some meetings have guest speakers like the Bexar County Extension Agents  who spoke on Texas SuperStar plants and pollinators  then visited the plots and gave tips to gardeners on their vegetables and flowers.  There have also been talks on subjects like butterflies and Texas Wild Flowers.

Special Events:    The garden club hosts an Earth Day Open house for residents with tours and some free potting plants and other garden produce.
